First a recce then the real thing ...

10am and we're off for a recce, I have volunteered to take photos of the three boats crossing Chirk Aqueduct and I'm going to see where I'll get the best shots ...
... whoops an accident up the hill, we didn't hear any sirens so assumed no-one was badly hurt.
The River Ceiriog flowing under the road bridge
Chirk aqueduct inn all her glory with a very hard frost on the grass ...
The Ceiriog flows under the aqueduct ...
... and Geoff puts those huge stantchions in perspective
The aqueduct and the viaduct
I wonder if there was ever a statue in there
Icicles hanging from under the archway ...
The road bridge and The Bridge pub as we return ...
... to the boats where they're all preparing for the day's cruise ...
... and here they are ...Seyella first ...
... then Moore2Life ...
... and Rock n Roll bringing up the rear.

Click to see a short video of the trip (not brilliant but not too bad either!)
I walked back across the field and climbed the hill back to the towpath, crossed the aqueduct on foot to where George is waiting for me ...
... and there's Ann and Chas just leaving Chirk tunnel as we enter it ...
We've moored up at the northern end of the tunnel for a couple of hours to visit Chirk Castle, then we'll move on again.

  1. What a beautiful post and one that made me really jealous of your day. We shall be on the Llangollen next week - from Natwich - don't know if we will make the aquaducts, so a great thank you for this!!

  3. I've wanted to visit this canal for years, so I'm quite jealous of you - the pictures are great. Some of my ancestors are from this part of the world, and I'd love to have the opportunity to have the time to really explore. That will unfortunately have to wait until I retire...
