Tilting at Windmills

Tuesday 26th July, still at Crofton, we're off for a walk ...
... we cross the sluices, some of which are open to top-up the canal ...
... and over Wilton Water ...
... to the very charming village of Wilton ...
... where the poultry roams free ...
... around the duck pond and gardens ...
... and most of the houses ...
... are thatched - an idilic place!
We continue up the hill through the bearded barley ...
... and stop for a breather to look back down onto the rooftops of the village ...
... and away over yonder to a patchwork of colour ...
... and up the hill where we see the first glimpse of Wilton Windmill ...
... in the sunshine
Built in 1821 on land leased from Lord Ailesbury the mill worked for about 100 years when it fell into disuse around 1910 due to the introduction of steam powered mills.
I presume this is the same Ailesbury family as in my previous posting -
Returning to RnR via the old Roman Road ...
... we soon see the pumping station on the summit of the Kennet and Avon Canal.

  1. Used to be a passable bar in Wilton, not too bad lunchspot, as I recall! Look forward to the next instalment of your travels.

  2. Yes Iain - the Swan Inn but we didn't walk through the village - you obviously know the area well!
