Winter Maintenance at Hack Green and a trip to Wenbury

We decided today to have a spin out in the car for a couple of hours and made our way via the country roads to Hack Green Locks to see what was going on there. The locks are closed to navigation from 8th November to 22nd December for gate replacements and repair of bridge 86.
I assume they mean for further information
info boards abound for canal open days click here
This is the top lock at Hack Green where the bridge is also under repair - the diver had just got from the water after setting the dam ...
... we asked why they didn't use stop planks and he answered that their company did it this way - fair enough!
you can see the cill here ...
... but the lock is not quite empty
from below the lock the damage to the bridge is clear to see
a busy sight looking towards the bottom lock
getting ready to raise the new gate
elfin safety (as Maffi would say) is paramount
the tug pulls the hopper from the lock
this beam definitely needed replacing
plate stating built in 2010

From Hack Green we decided to drive over to the Llangollen Canal - we've not cruised this one yet
we arrived at Wenbury in time to see the IWA award winning shared ownership boat First Dawn approaching the lift bridge
and wending its way to the next one
a visit to the local canalside hostelry was called for and the Dusty Miller fitted the bill perfectly.  It has very recently been taken over by new management and the food was delicious.  The pub is being renovated in January and is well worth a visit.
We finished off our little excursion with a visit to the local church but unfortunately it was closed as repairs were being undertaken inside.
