Quarter past six in the pouring rain yesterday evening a horse passed our mooring above lock 31on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal …
I grabbed the camera and dashed to the back of RnR to see this lady Sue Day, Horsedrawn Enterprises tying up boat horse (not sure if this is Bilbo Baggins or Bobbin) …
… and then quietly floating past me came Maria …
... coming in to the lock landing above lock 31E
These would have been the boards that the leggers would have used on April 21to take Maria through Standedge Tunnel - the horse would have been driven over the moors above the tunnel
Working boat Maria was moored at the Marsden portal of Standedge Tunnel when we came through on Wednesday last week and has travelled from there today.
It has been raining for hours today and they were all absolutely soaking wet!
He wasn’t very happy either standing in the rain!
Happy to be going home I bet!
Nicely moored up and the cloths are being fastened over the top-planks. The boat was soon locked up and left.
Until we heard the weather forecast we were going to move down the next 10 locks today, but it’s not to be - heavy rain all day with winds gusting up to gale force 9 (47mph)! We’ve enough water to last until tomorrow and up to now the forecast is less windy and dry - let’s hope so!
